Post #63, 3-5-2017, Interior Time, Power Brakes & EFI Fuel System

65 Mustang Restoration

You would think that the interior would be easy to do,,, Wrong!  There is a ton involved with it and a lot of planning can be helpful. For instance,,, a 65 coupe did not come with a factory overhead dome light, even though the beam in the center of the roof was already drilled for one. So I bought a Scott Drake dome light and ran wires underneath the headliner before I installed it. Installing the headliner is quite the deal,,, thank goodness for you tube videos! Needless to say, I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

Even the carpet takes a long time to get it right,,, a lot of patience is helpful. It really helps to have all of the trim pieces on hand.

It's nice to put the seats the wife & I reupholstered into the car for hopefully a final time, along with the new seat belts.

One of the main safety upgrades that we did, was to install new 3-point seat belts for the front seats. I was surprised at how comfortable they actually are. They were actually one of the easier items to install.

New custom kick panels with built-in speaker mounts for the new 6 1/2" JBL speakers. You would think you just install speakers,, but nooooo, I also had to modify the outer cover. Below are all of the nice new shifter parts,, those extra wires are power & ground wires for the custom console I plan to build a bit down the road.

And don't forget about all of that fun wiring,,, notice the LED lights for the cluster? It was a great day when I was able to put a temporary battery in & tested out all of the lights,,, yeah baby,, they all worked and didn't burn the car down to the ground. I really liked the sequential tail lights!

Power Brakes

Figured it was as good as of a time as any to get the new power brakes installed & bled out. I bought this sweet little setup some while ago on Ebay,,, this setup is for a front disc, rear drum combo, with a built in proportioning valve.

A bit of modifying needs to be done to the brake pedal stud(lowered about 1").

EFI Fuel Tank

One of the biggest upgrades we're making to the car, is to add a Fitech EFI System. When you do that,, you have to have the proper fuel system to supply the high pressure a EFI system requires. When I talked to the Fitech people, for my situation they recommended that I get a "Tanks" setup built specifically for a 65 mustang. Luckily, 3 days later we went to a Good Guys Event in Des Moines and hooked up with Yogis and got a deal from them,,, I think they had bought out the "Tanks" company.

Their kits include the new filler neck, sending unit, and the fuel pump(gaskets, etc)

This is the assortment of lines & fittings I used for the installation. Don't forget the ground wire.

It seems to have worked pretty well. Here's the underside & all of the plumbing down there,,, I was luck to find a MSD coil bracket that seemed to work perfectly for the fuel filter mount.

 Until next time,,,,

  1. Doug, the interior looks stunning! Very nice job. I love your photo documentation too. It may come in handy with those of us who will eventually get to where you are on our Mustangs.
